FCRi connects companies and science stimulating the development of laser equipments for the aquatic world

The program Matching of the Fundació Catalana per la Recerca i la Innovació facilitates the contact between Ingesom and the UPC to measure the levels of biomass in the tanks of fish farms.

The Department of Engineering Agrifood and Biotechnology of the Polytechnical University of Catalonia (UPC), and Ingesom, company specialized in automation and control of industrial processes, regular collaborator of the IRTA, analyze together the possibility of developing new laser light equipments to automatically measure the levels of biomass (weight of the fish) in the tanks of fish farms that increase evidently the precision of the systems being used currently.

The collaboration is framed in the pilot program Matching Science–Companies initiated last July by the Fundació Catalana per la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRi). The new laser equipments would be based on the results of the investigation realized in this sector by the UPC and the experience of Ingesom in integral solutions for inland aquaculture.

The FCRi connects and energizes the relation between both entities as part of this program, while thinking how to align challenges of innovation in the companies related to a productive sector with the scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs who have the best aptitudes to solve them. At the same time, the program aims to receive private funds for research projects in universities or centers that can solve concrete productive needs of the Catalan industry. On the one hand, the program of the FCRi identifies research teams with certain technological solutions and connects them with companies that could be interested.

Finally, it tries to combine science, companies and investors listening previously to the needs of every part. A team of the FCRi will then analyze them and determine compatibilities between the parts.

From July, contacts have been made between companies and research teams of different industrial sectors such as medical diagnosis and toys and recreational technology.

The program Matching Science-Companies is included in the targets of the FCRi to encourage the innovative vocation in the business world and contributes to the creation of an ecosystem of innovation between public and private agents sustainable and guided to results.
